A 49-YEAR-OLD grandmother from Sydney's west has won almost $12 million in a jackpot lottery, crediting a sore arm for the win.

The Penrith woman, who does not want to be identified, won a record $11.79 million in the $5 NSW Jackpot Lottery, almost double the previous highest payout of $6.05 million in 2001.

NSW Lotteries officials said she told them she had bought the winning ticket on a whim.

"Lucky I had a sore arm the other day," she said. "I went into the chemist for some Deep Heat and I had a feeling I should buy a $5 lottery ticket."

When asked what she would do with her prizemoney, she said: "Plenty".

NSW Lotteries said the woman was unaware of her good fortune until she returned a voicemail message left on her mobile phone yesterday morning.
