Keep Lottery Syndicates Up To Date
Monday October 20, 2008
Lottery syndicates should keep all members up-to-date on payments into the syndicate and also have a written agreement in case of winnings made while a member of the syndicate is in arrears. A lottery syndicate in Logan, Queensland, recently won a large prize but is now in a legal dispute over the winnings. One of the syndicate members had not paid their share of an entry and is now suing the other syndicate members for a share in the prize money of $571,428.58.
So far there is no legal decision as to whether the plaintiff is entitled to a share, but the other members of the syndicate would have an even stronger case if they had all signed a contract agreeing that falling behind in payments forfeits any winnings for lottery draws that have not been paid for. While lottery games such as Thursday Powerball or Tuesday Oz Lotto are meant to be fun, the possibility of large winnings is very real, so it is better to be safe than sorry in regards to rules of winning shares in a syndicate.
