Charitable lottery games
9 September 2008
Some lottery games run in order to make money for various charities, although the prizes are rarely like those of commercial lotteries. For instance, home lottery games tend to offer a house or set of units as a jackpot prize, compared to the millions of dollars that can be won in games such as the Thursday Powerball or the Tuesday Oz Lotto. The upside is that tickets for these charitable lotteries can be cheaper and often a winner must be drawn, so the odds of winning big in a home lottery can be quite good in comparison to some commercial lotteries.
The biggest reason that commercial lottery games tend to be more popular than charitable ones, though, is probably due to the nature of playing them as games. Lotteries such as the Wednesday Lotto and Monday Lotto tend to be broadcast on television and can have an element of excitement to them as the numbers are drawn. Home lotteries, on the other hand, tend not to have the gaming element to them. Also, some will end up sending you junk mail to promote their other lottery games, as you will usually need to provide contact information so you can be informed of whether you have won a prize.
